40 Weeks Pregnant and Delivery Story

November 7, 2013

40w

So I can’t believe I made it 40 weeks..and 4 days to be exact. And I decided today I was going to get my membrane stripped since I am past due. So I went to the doctor and they told me I was 2 cm dilated and they asked me if I wanted my membrane stripped and I told them yes. To my surprise it didn’t really hurt, but as soon as I got up to go schedule my next appt I felt a gush of liquid so I ran to the bathroom. Turns out I was gushing blood, so I went back to the doc and they did another exam and they thought I had broken my water but there was too much blood to do an accurate test. So they instructed me to go to the hospital asap….so off I went….

I went to triage where they ran a bunch of tests and they couldn’t tell if I broke my water either because of all the blood, so they scheduled an ultrasound to see if my placenta had detached itself. The ultrasound showed everything looked good and my water still intact but it looked a little low so they wanted to monitor me for 24 hours to make sure the baby and I were okay. In the meantime they inserted cervidil to try and soften my cervix and induce labor…well that didn’t work.  So 24 hours in the hospital later…and 3 doctors later (they were roating shifts) my doctor came in (the one I have been seeing most of my pregnancy) and said, “this baby is coming out today!” After a brief exam she recommended mechanical dilation, where they insert a balloon behind your cervix and inflate the balloon to 5 cm and dangle weights on the end….it was something I had never heard of and and after some googling and asking a few nurses I decided to do it. After all, we had to get this baby out. The mechanical dilation worked like a charm and after 3 hours I was 5 cm dilated. After that, they broke my water and I went into active labor (it was about this time I got an epidural, that thing is a miracle!) and about 4 hours later I was ready to start pushing….after 5 hours of pushing (yes 5 hours…you know they say new moms can only push for 2.5 hours, so I felt like an over achiever) I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy 8lbs 7oz 🙂 It was crazy his eyes were wide open looking around the room and his thumb went right into his mouth…he surely is a sucker! I just would like to say that my husband was absolutely amazing during this whole process I couldn’t have done it without him! Not only did he hold my legs when I was pushing (because I couldn’t feel them anymore with the epidural) but he was a huge motivator during the 5 hour pushing process especially when I “thought” I was pushing but it was doing nothing 🙂 Did I mention he managed to video tape the whole thing too, I have to do some major editing but hopefully I will have a video soon.

If you are going to be giving birth soon or know someone that will you have to check out this video and share it!! It’s amazing! I wish I would have it prior to leaving the hospital:)

Making a Phone Call…

October 1, 2013

phone call

I guess I never thought I would miss someone answering the phone “normally”…let me explain…I’m 39 weeks and 2 days pregnant now and pretty much EVERY time I call someone, either they have it in there voice that they thought “it was the call” or they just answer the phone “are you in labor?” So i’ve started just blurting out as soon as someone answers the phone…”no this is not the call” just to put the other person at ease…Here is the silver lining though….Pretty much everyone answers my call! HA!

It just so happened that while I was creating this comic Elle posted a video that touched on the same topic! I just had to post it! Its just so TRUE!!! I just love her videos!

38 Weeks Pregnant Progress Photo

September 23, 2013

38w

I can’t believe i’m just 2 weeks away!!! It’s crazy!

So a little update:

So far no contractions yet, but I have been getting a little cramping which the doctor says it could be because my body is getting ready. I’ve gained a total of 34.5 pounds so far (164.5) I weighed in at the doctor this morning. The newest body morph is the pain in my hands, but mostly my left hand, it almost feels like arthritis (not that I know what that feels like, but i’m taking a guess) which I guess is common too? Trying to drink as much water as I can, which is making me pee almost 12 times a day!! ugh! The baby is in head down position which is good and the baby room is finally ready! woo hoo!

The biggest shock to me, which happened last week is how everyone treats you like you can go into labor any minute…it’s just crazy to think…but I guess i’m at the stage where I could! I did have an interesting experience at the doctor last week, they talked about “stripping my membrane” which in my 7 birthing/labor care classes NO ONE MENTIONED! Apparently it’s a way to induce labor naturally? I had not heard of it and i’m still debating about getting it done? maybe at 40 weeks?

Going to a concert 8 and half months preggo!

September 13, 2013

36 weeks

photo (2)So my husband got me tickets to my favorite band BEFORE we knew we were pregnant, and I asked my doctor if it was okay if I went and she said as long as I wasn’t too close to the speaker it would be fin. I was so excited! The concert we were going to see was Fun, which I love! I knew my husband was going to throw out the “pregnancy card” a couple times at the concert I just didn’t think it would work! As soon as we drove up to the venue he parked in VIP, and as the security guard came running up to tell us not to park there, he calmly said, “Um, mam, do you see what i’m dealing with here, I have a 8.5 month pregnant wife” and as soon as he said that she guided us toward the best VIP spot that had 🙂 Then when we were at the concert he went up to the security guard and explained our situation and that we had “mosh pit” tickets and we couldn’t be that close to the speaker and I couldn’t really stand the whole time, so they guided us to the best seats in the house where I could sit and enjoy the show! It was a great evening, I had so much fun at Fun! ha! And I owe it all to my hubby 🙂

Some serious nesting going on….

September 9, 2013

Everyone keeps asking me, “so are you ready for the baby yet?” and I would tell them honestly, “not completely, but getting there…” Then for some reason I was looking at the calendar and I realized….OMG I”M ONLY 29 days away!!!  So needless to say, i’ve gone on super nesting mode, put together the bassinet, got the carseat base in the car,  (and practiced removing and putting in the carrier), got a glider, bought all the essentials, like diapers and wipes and such…Now I just have to get a pediatrician and I should be all set. I still can’t believe it’s only a couple weeks away! So during this time, I did ALOT of research, and here are some top items you will need immediately when bringing home a newborn:

1) Car Seat- this is a must, they won’t even let you leave the hospital if you don’t have it properly installed

2) Diapers

3) Wipes

4) Diaper Cream

5) Bassinet (something for the baby to sleep in)

4) onesies (6 pack)  and socks (the kind that fold over, I heard they stay on better), sleep sacks (heard these are awesome makes changing in the middle of the night easier)

5) burp cloths

6) mittens (so they don’t scratch themselves)

7) formula (if your not breastfeeding)

8) breast pump ( i was wondering whether to put this as a necessity at first but I think I’m going to get one)

9) Bottles (especially if you formula feed, and if you pump)

10)Boppy pillow (they recommend bringing this to hospital if you plan on breast feeding)

11) swaddle blankets

12)  Nursing pajamas ( you need this at the hospital, I was told to get “nursing pajamas” not just regular, it make your life easier)

13) lanolin oil, for your nipples

14) breast pads, for the leaking….

15) glider/ rocking chair, I heard this was pretty important, not sure if it’s something you need right away, but it can help get the baby to sleep

Have I forgot anything? I probably have…what did you need ready right when you got home with your newborn?
